Try to position yourself so that you have to move around as little as possible. If you have your back to an area that is naturally going to give away the presence of a deer coming up behind you, this is a big advantage. A good bed of dry leaves, brush, a briar thicket, fairly still water, rocky ground, or anything else that would let you know that a deer is approaching will allow you to concentrate more on other areas.

If you locate an area where there are a substantial number of droppings, you have probably found either a bedding area or a food source. Try to determine how fresh the droppings, whether the location is a food source or a bedding area, and how the deer are approaching and leaving the area. If it is determined that the area is a bedding area and you plan to hunt it in the morning, check out how the deer are entering the area to determine your stand location. If you are hunting it in the evening, then check out how they are leaving the area, and set up in such a way as to hunt their exit route. If you determine the area to be a food source, your strategy should be just the opposite. In the morning, set up to hunt the exit route, remembering that these exit routes from food sources might be difficult to select. In the evening, set up on the entrance side of the area.
